Athletes/Entertainers as Role Models for Change
11:11 AM on November 17, 2008
"Barack Obama is president and black kids are now looking for role models to
help them achieve their dreams." Some people suggest that
entertainers/athletes should assume this role since they are in the
spotlight and kids look up to them. Charles Barkley was absolutely correct
when he stated that "I'm not a role model... Just because I dunk a
basketball doesn't mean I should raise your kids." These individuals are
doing a job just like anybody else. Why should they be responsible for your
children?
They are your children. You are responsible for raising them. You are
responsible for finding role models for them. Your children don't know
these athletes and entertainers and will probably never get to know them.
Just a suggestion: why not look for role models in people your child is
more likely to meet/know/interact with: teachers, police officers, letter
carriers, janitors, doctors, firefighters, etc. We are all role models.
Our actions; positive or negative, are evaluated and/or emulated by someone.
Children don't have far to look for a role model. The bigger question is,
are you being a positive role model for children you interact with.
Please share your thoughts.
